Test Posting and Testing in Business Central Configuration

Sometimes you want to test a Business Central configuration posting before applying it in the production set of books. Or, maybe you want to try a different configuration to confirm it works and has the desired results before committing to it in the production company. When implementing a new ERP, or even when optimizing an existing one, this is an essential phase.

Business Central has a handy function that takes care of this called “Companies” your user needs the right permissions to access this feature). herewith Companies, you can copy one company to new temporary test company, test whatever you want and then delete the test company after you are finished with it.

Steps To Do This

  • Type “Companies” into the search box and select it.
  • You will be presented with a list of your existing companies. To make a new test company, click on the company you want to copy in the list, and select “Process” and “Copy”.
  • You will be prompted to enter the name of the new test company.
  • After entering the test company name, press OK to start copying.

It may take a long time to copy the company depending on the amount of associated data, so it is prudent to do this outside of business hours until you know how long it takes for your company.

When the company is finished copying, you can select the company from the ”Gear” at the top of the screen. Then, select “My Settings” and change the company using the 3 dots (…)

Test away in this test company to apply your new Business Central configuration.

When you are done with the company and want to delete it, use the same “Companies” page, click on the Company to delete and select delete. You cannot delete the company that you are actively using., so be sure to switch back to your live company first.

There may be some extension licensing restrictions when doing your testing, but these can be handled by the publisher of your extension.
